How to Check if Gold is Real

Determining the authenticity of gold involves several methods, each varying in accuracy. This blog post delves into these methods, focusing on two main topics: how to check gold at home and more professional methods for verifying gold authenticity.

Key Highlights:

  • Visual Inspection: Real gold does not tarnish or show signs of black discoloration or green corrosion, unlike imitations made of copper.
  • Weight Check: Genuine gold is heavier than most metals used in inexpensive jewelry. Comparing weights can help determine authenticity.
  • Gold Stamps: Check for authenticity stamps indicating gold purity, such as 9k, 14k, 18k, and 24k, or their numerical equivalents like 375, 585, and 999.
  • Magnet Test: Pure gold is not magnetic, so using a magnet can help rule out many fake items.
  • Professional Methods:
    • Acid Testing: Determines the presence and purity of gold using specific acid solutions.
    • Gold X-Ray Machines: Provides precise readings of gold purity, requiring special equipment and training.
    • Refinery Methods: Involves using lasers and x-ray machines to inspect the internal structure of gold, primarily for large items.

How to Check if Gold is Real at Home?

The simplest method involves examining the gold piece for signs of deterioration. Gold, being a noble metal, does not tarnish like silver. It should not display black discoloration or green corrosion marks, often seen in copper, a common material used to imitate gold.

Another indicator is the weight of the gold. Gold typically weighs more than other metals used in inexpensive jewellery (not including stainless steel). For instance, a bulky necklace that feels surprisingly light could be a sign of inauthenticity. This method works best when you have a similar item known to be gold for comparison, though it is not foolproof. For us, as experts, it is quite a fast and effective method as we have a lot of experience but we can also be surprised.

Checking for gold stamps is another basic method for telling if your gold jewellery is real. While gold stamps are generally not forged, exceptions exist, especially in older items. Look for these stamps (from low purity to high ones) 9k, 10k, 14k, 18k, 20k, 21k, 22k, 24k, or the matching 3 numbers system 375, 416, 585, 750, 833, 875, 916, 999. Some items will have Chinese stamps indicating Chinese origin. These are usually found in inconspicuous places such as the inner shank of a ring or the clasp of a necklace or bracelet. It will help to use a magnifying glass. If you don’t have one, trying using  your phone’s camera can be helpful in this examination.

Lastly, using a magnet can be informative. Pure gold is 100% not magnetic. Alloys may show weak magnetism but typically none. This test won’t confirm gold’s authenticity but can effectively rule out many fakes.

How Do Professionals Check if Gold is Real?

Professionals use three primary methods:

  1. Acid Testing: This method determines both the presence and purity of gold, though it’s not applicable to all gold carats. These acid solutions, used with a stone to scrape the gold onto, are available for purchase. However, caution is advised due to the hazardous nature of acids.
  2. Gold X-Ray Machines: These sophisticated machines, requiring a licence and training, provide precise readings of gold purity levels, particularly useful for small items.
  3. Refinery Methods: Used primarily for large, thick gold items, this method involves using a laser to penetrate the gold and inspecting the internal structure with an x-ray machine or chemical solutions.

Conclusion:

While there are various methods to check the authenticity of gold, each has its limitations. At-home tests provide a preliminary assessment, but for a more accurate determination, professional methods are recommended. Regardless of the method used, understanding these techniques can empower you to make informed decisions about your gold items.

We hope these tips will help you sell your Gold with the best outcome for you.
