Diamonds have different sizes, shapes and qualities and gold alloys have different purity levels. These factors will most definitely affect the price it will fetch when you try to sell your Jewellery. These are some of the basics of how the traits affect the price offered to you.

Key Highlights:

When selling your diamond, several factors influence its value. Round diamonds fetch higher prices than other shapes, and larger carat weights significantly increase value. Diamond color, ranging from D (colorless) to Z (yellow tinge), and clarity, with FL (Flawless) and IF (Internally Flawless) being the most valuable, are crucial. The cut grade impacts a round diamond’s sparkle and value, while the precision of the cut matters for other shapes. Certified diamonds are worth more, especially from reputable labs. Items from top brands, higher gold karat, and rare fancy color diamonds (like blue, red, pink) also fetch higher prices. Natural diamonds are more valuable than treated or lab-grown ones.

Diamond Shape

Is your diamond a round diamond or a shaped diamond? Round diamonds have a separate price list and will fetch a higher price than any other shape of diamonds.

Diamond Size

As you probably know, the diamond carat weight has a very strong effect on the fetched price exactly the same way it costs more when you buy it. And the differences are prominent. For example half a carat diamond will not fetch half the price of a one carat diamond but much less than that, depending on the other quality traits.

Diamond Colour

The white diamonds colour scale ranges from D colour to Z colour. D represents a completely colourless diamond and Z has a very yellow tinge. D will fetch the most money.

Diamond Clarity

When diamonds are formed in nature they often have inclusions of various types. These inclusions, their size, their quantity and their type will determine a clarity score. FL and IF are perfect diamonds that have no blemishes (even under X10 magnification) and they will fetch the highest price.

Diamond Cut

Round diamonds have a cut grade that, in the bottom line, represents their ability to return light —> sparkle. Excellent cut diamonds will fetch the best price when selling your diamond jewellery.

Diamond Shape Model

With other shapes of diamonds the model is very important as they dont get a cut grade. Unfortunately many shaped diamonds will be far from perfectly cut diamonds. Why? In order to bring them to a perfect model you lose much more from the rough weight. So manufacturers sometimes prefer to keep the weight high. The better the model of the shaped diamond – the more it will fetch.

Diamond Certifications

A diamond with certification will fetch more than a diamond without gemological certification. Although keep in mind that the type of certification is also a huge factor – many certifications are useless.

Super Brands

Items will fetch more if you have the original purchase papers of authentication.

Gold Alloy

The higher the gold karat, the more money it will fetch as the gold carat represents the level of purity of the alloy.

Fancy Colour Diamonds

This is a very tricky subject as colour diamonds don’t have a price list. The prices it can fetch will depend on its colour and its intensity. Blue, red, Pink will be very expensive and will fetch more than white diamonds and colours as yellow and brown will fetch less than white diamonds.

Natural Diamonds

Natural diamonds will fetch much more than treated diamonds. Lab grown CVD diamonds will fetch nothing as they have no resale value.

Conclusion:

When it comes to selling your diamond jewellery, several factors can influence its value. Understanding these can help you set realistic expectations and maximise your return. First, the shape of the diamond matters, with round diamonds typically commanding higher prices. The carat weight significantly impacts the price, as larger diamonds fetch disproportionately higher amounts. The diamond’s colour and clarity also play crucial roles, with colourless (D) and flawless (FL) diamonds being the most valuable.

For round diamonds, the cut grade is essential because it affects the diamond’s brilliance and sparkle. For other shapes, the quality of the cut matters too; well-cut shapes are rarer and thus more valuable. Diamond certifications from reputable gemological laboratories can enhance the diamond’s marketability and value. If you have jewellery from super brands, having the original purchase papers can help you fetch a premium price. The purity of the gold alloy also affects the final price, with higher karats being more valuable.

Fancy colour diamonds are a bit different, with rarer colours like blue, red, and pink fetching significantly more than white diamonds, while yellows and browns might fetch less. Lastly, natural diamonds hold much higher resale value compared to treated or lab-grown diamonds, which may have little to no resale value.

By understanding these factors, you can better navigate the process of selling your diamond jewellery, ensuring you get a fair and favourable deal. If you have any questions or need further assistance, feel free to reach out to us. We’re here to help!
