Privacy and Sensitivity

  • When you are selling your diamonds the establishment you are selling to must allow you privacy. This is important because of its basic customer service. Moreover, many of the sellers have feelings attached to the old jewellery – good or bad and they are sometimes in a sensitive position. Privacy is important in these cases. And sensitivity as well.

Tools and Certificates

  • A serious buyer will have the right tools of the trade like cleaning tools (a dirty diamond is not possible to truly check) colour paper, scales, machines that check if the diamond is natural and so on. This is a very important indication for a serious buyer.

More than that, make sure they are licensed to give this kind of service.

Transparency

  • The process needs to be done in front of you and with detailed explanations. They need to be more than willing to answer any question as well. This is an important way to see the integrity of the buyer that sits in front of you.

Flexibility

  • This is a great indication of an honest buyer and is relevant to the more high value items. For example if you walk into a diamond buyer’s office with your grandma 80 years old 5 carat diamond ring. You more than likely have no certifications for it. You probably dont know its exact quality and weight. Moreover, since the diamond is old it will probably require recutting in order to be resold on the current market.

In these cases, If the buyer sees a nice potential for the stone he can offer the longer route.  The one that is good is if you are not pressured for immediate cash. In this route they will offer you the opportunity to gemological certify the diamond. In some cases even recut the stone before they give you an offer for it. The advantage for you is that you can choose:

  • The immediate cash way were you get a lower payment as they take the risk
  • Or you take the “long scenic” route but might get more money in the end of it.

Conclusion:

Sometimes there are better ways for you than simply selling your jewellery. Ways that are more suitable for your needs,

For example, you love jewellery but selling old pieces or things you inherited from someone that did not share your sense of style. You will most likely buy other jewellery sooner or later so the best way for you is actually to trade in. When you trade your jewellery in the right place you get more for the old goods and get a better price on the new pieces.

Another good example is consignment. This is the best route for the items that were bought from super brands like Cartier and Tiffany’s. As buyers that buy for stock are aware of their cash flow they will not want to pay the premium you paid for the branded items – unless they have a client for it. If you consign they can look for a client that is willing to pay somewhat more for the brand. You will have to wait but in the end might get more than just selling.

Hopefully the above points made you more familiar with the process of selling your jewellery and also understand how to recognise the more suitable buyers for you. We welcome you to contact us with any questions on the process. Best of luck in your path.

We hope these tips will help you sell your jewellery with the best outcome for you.
